What is Tyrosinase?

If your skin concerns center around hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and other forms of skin discoloration, then learning about tyrosinase and the role it plays in melanin production is important. Let me help you understand.Β

Tyrosinase (the melanin controller) is a copper-containing enzyme that catalyzes the production of melanin and pigments via oxidation. This enzyme exists in animals, plants, you, and me.

When tyrosinase overproduces melanin (the source of your skin, hair, and eye color), it turns tyrosine into dopaquinone, which then turns to melanin, resulting in skin discolorations, such as sunspots, dark spots, and what we callΒ "hyperpigmentation".

Tyrosinase doesn't mean to do us any harm. This response is usually due to some triggered threat, such as UV rays, but this can also be a response to injuries, and even acne breakouts (inflammation), which can cause our melanocyte cells to create more tyrosinase.

The overproduced melanin goes into melanosomes and is then distributed to the neighboring keratinocytes. That's when you begin to see visible discoloration and dark spots starting to appear on your skin.

Now, here is what you really really really need to know:

  • Tyrosinase controls melanin productionΒ
  • Finding ingredients that target tyrosinase and melanin production (such as kojic acid, carrot seed, and hydroquinone) tend to be more effective at attacking hyperpigmentation, blemishes, dark spots, and brightening complexion than skincare products that have no effect on tyrosinase
  • Learning about what individual ingredients do for skin is essential to avoid disappointmentΒ
  • If you have more severe hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration, it may be helpful to consult with a dermatologist or a doctor to help determine what the best products are for your specific skin care needs.

Ingredients that can help contribute to brighter complexion (to name a few):

  • Carrot Seed
  • Turmeric
  • Orange (Citrus oils)
  • Tea Tree
  • Sandalwood
  • Kojic Acid
  • Sea Buckthorn
  • Pomegranate Seed
