What is Hyaluronic Acid?

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a synthetic version of the natural water-retaining molecule found in our body. It acts a humectant, drawing water to the surface of the skin and retaining up to 1,000 times its weight in water!

  • found in skin, connective tissues, joints
  • used in dermal fillers
  • maintains moisture, keeping the skin hydrated
  • maintains elasticity
  • aids in wound healing
  • found in anti-aging skincare creams and serums
  • used in injections to treat arthritis

How We Lose Natural Hyaluronic Acid:

  • Aging: reduced by 50% by age 50
  • Reduces primarily by smoking cigarettes and poor eating habits
  • Lower estrogen levels after menopause
  • UV rays

 Skin Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid:

  • hydrates and protects the moisture barrier
  • suitable for people with sensitive skin
  • helps the skin retain moisture
  • can be used safely with most other skincare product ingredients including sunscreens
  • safe for adults and teens and is generally a great starter product for teens just learning to care for their skin
  • helps to firm and plump skin
  • helps to reduce wrinkles and prevent premature aging
  • helps reduce redness and inflammation in irritated skin

BEST FOR: Almost Everyone

  • Hyaluronic acid is suitable for adults, teens, and people with sensitive skin.
  • Is generally a great, safe product for teens just beginning to take care of their skin.
  • Those seeking a gentle moisturizer, elasticity and barrier protection.
  • Those seeking to help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How to Use It:

  1. Apply hyaluronic acid serum to a clean damp face. Then apply an oil, such as a Flora Face Hydrator (by Dollhouse Botanicals) as an occlusive. This helps seal in nutrients, antioxidants, and moisture, increasing hydration. Using with an oil increases the time HA remains on the skin.
  2. Exercise caution when using hyaluronic acid in low humidity environments without an occlusive, as HA can dry out skin.
  3. May not be safe for people with severe allergic reactions, especially to gram-positive bacterial proteins

Other Information:

  1. Topical application of HA effects degrades within 24 hours and can be washed off, as they do not penetrate below the surface of the skin.
  2. Dermal fillers: A dermal filler with hyaluronic acid is the only way hyaluronic acid penetrates beyond the surface of the skin and lasts for 2-5 years (though it was originally thought that derma filler HA only lasted up to 1 year). This may be the best option for longer term results, though more expensive.
  3. Topical HA serums are usually more affordable.
