Most of us have read through reviews about a single product and scrolled confusedly through various different posts that look like this:
"Wow, I only started using this yesterday and I already see a difference in my skin!"
"I started to see results around the second week."
"Didn't help my acne at all. This actually made it worse."
"It took three months of consistent use for me to finally see significant results."
"I've been using this for two years now, and I haven't had a bad acne breakout since I started!"
"This is the only thing that works for my skin!"
"Used this for a week now. Ugh. Another product that didn't work. Waste of money."
"I have really bad hyperpigmentation on my cheeks and chin, and this is supposed to help but it didn't help me at all."
Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β -Different people who've tried the exact SAME product, but who have each experienced a different result.
This can be confusing information when trying to figure out whether or not you should try a new product, however, these kinds of reviews are very real and very realistic because peopleΒ do not share identical skin types. If we did, everything that worked for someone else would work for us, in the same amount of time that it worked for that person.Β
I'm not talking about skin type as in oily, combination, normal, mature, sensitive, but rather your own unique skin design that only you have.
Understanding that your skin is different from mine or his or hers influences how you treat your skin whether you realize it or not. Here are a few examples of common human mistakes we make when choosing products for our skin:
-
Buying for Others: Determining whether or not a product will work for us based on how well it worked or did not work for someone else. YourΒ skin is not her skin or his skin. Don't expect the exact same negative or positive results that someone else had.Β
- Purchasing People: Happens when we buy a product based on people-such as influencers alone-rather than the product ingredients. Trends come and go and offer us no guarantees.
- Blind Buying- Buying with no knowledge or interest in the ingredients (the information that tells on a product's ability to be effective at what it claims to be effective for). For example, you purchase a product with only the ingredients squalane and lavender because the advertisement says it will instantly help remove your hyperpigmentation when, in reality, squalane nor lavender has that capability. Squalane and lavender together might be useful as a skin soothing, smoothing moisturizer, offering additional barrier protection, but highly unlikely to significantly affect skin pigment. This is where your knowledge of ingredients come in handy when making a decision.
- Expecting all products to completely remove your problems (such as severe wrinkling) within the first 24-48 hours of use. Without special cosmetic prescription products, Botox, and other pricey cosmetic, surgical procedures, this is highly unlikely to happen.Β
How to Change This:
- Start focusing on the ingredients and looking up information about what they do. Are they natural or non-natural?Β Β Both natural and non-natural ingredients are designed to do different things for your skin. Find out what benefits those ingredients actually offer. When you find a product that works wonders for your skin, consider using products with similar ingredients!
- Don't let varying reviews confuse or deter you from exploring your options. Know that those are the unique experiences of those other people.Β If you feel that a product might help you, and the ingredients seem like something that might work for you-give it a shot.
- If you've tried everything without success, still do not give up. There are other options including visiting a dermatologist, esthetician, or other specialists who might be able to give you more information about your unique skin type and guide you in the right direction to the kind of products you need!
- Know your basic skin type. Do you have normal, dry, oily, combination, mature, or sensitive skin? If your concern is dryness, then you simply need a good moisturizer with barrier, collagen, and elastin protection. (Follow our blogs for more information about this topic!)
- Give products time to work!Β Reviews from various skincare businesses provide significant proof that not all things work in the same duration of time for everyone. Sheila might begin to see results the next day, Tonya the next week, and Michelle-the following month. Consistency is key!
Most importantly, remember you want ingredients that work for YOUR skin...not hers.
